Metamorphosis is a first person platformer where you play as a man named Gregor, who’s been turned into a bug of some sort. He has been informed to head to the mysterious Tower to do a job and to be made human again.

I… I don’t have a lot to say about this game. The platforming is good, playing as a bug is very interesting and allowing you to walk up walls and stuff is cool, but only if you’re sticky, and you get sticky by walking though ink or, I think, wood glue. You can’t really go on the ceiling, at least not for long, cause you weigh too much and you fall off, sticky or not. I really like the mechanics in this game, however the story is… kinda meh.
The story of the game is two fold, there’s Gregor’s story and his friend Josef’s story. You turn into a bug after partying with him one day then go about trying to become human and trying to help Josef who suddenly is charged with a crime. No one will tell him what his crime was or anything of that nature, he’s just forced to go with things, so you’re trying to help him and yourself. Beyond that the story doesn’t make a lot of sense, and it’s only told in tiny bits here and there, most of the game is interacting with other bugs and people turned bugs, but most of those interactions are mundane and frivolous, there’s just not a point to most of it. As a result, it leaves the game feeling like it doesn’t really have a story, after all, the only parts of the story you end up caring about are really Josef’s parts as you’re playing through Gregor’s story by going from point A to point B. That’s effectively Gregor’s entire story, I want to get to the tower and getting to the tower, after you get there, his story focuses on Josef for like two or three minutes then the game ends. Josef’s story is really the only one that matters and his is told in the first level then in tiny fragments in the background of other levels. It feels so empty, which is a shame cause the mechanics are really good, the gameplay is really good, but the story is so barely there.

Here’s how little the story mattered, I played the game for like ten or so hours over the past two days, playing pretty much just this game, nothing else, and I had to look up Gregor’s name, he’s the character you play as, he says his name ALL THE TIME, I still forgot it. His story truly means fucking nothing, you could have changed his character five or six times in the game and I wouldn’t have noticed. Josef’s story I remembered even though it was short and not oft touched on cause it felt important, for reasons I don’t really understand either.
Overall, I like the game. I like the mechanics of the game. I like the gameplay. I do NOT like the story, it’s pretty much completely useless sadly. I like the artisticness of the story, but it just falls flat sadly. I really hope to see more from this company as the gameplay is so good.
